- LAT 101: Beginner's LatinAn introduction to the basic grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of Latin designed to enable students to read and understand simple Latin prose and verse.
- LAT 105: Intermediate Latin: Catullus and His AgeThis course aims at increasing facility in reading Latin prose and poetry and introduces students to the literary culture of Republican Rome. We will read selections from Catullus, Caesar and Cicero.
- LAT 204/GSS 204: Readings in Latin Literature: Vergil's Afterlife: Transformation and Tradition in Latin EpicThis course is an introduction to the rich tradition of Latin epic after Vergil's Aeneid and to the study of allusion as a literary technique. We will focus on the motif of the descent to the underworld, from Vergil's own account of Aeneas' journey to consult the shade of his father, through the epic of the early empire (Lucan, Statius, Silius) and late antiquity (Claudian), to the renaissance (Petrarch, Vida). The pace is designed to allow students to build skills in reading Latin epic poetry.
- LAT 330: CiceroThe goal of this course is to read Cicero's works across generic boundaries and think about Cicero's actions and writing as occurring simultaneously. We will read a speech, a philosophical text, and a selection of letters from an exciting period in the history of the state and in Cicero's life. We will supplement our primary readings with scholarly articles and chapters that will help us put our texts into a broader context.
- LAT 401: Special Topics: Latin Prose CompositionOur goal is to strengthen and refine our grasp of Latin grammar and prose style. To this end, we shall read, analyze, and imitate masters of classical and late Latin prose. We shall also work through all or most of "Bradley's Arnold."
