Students develop advanced language skills while studying language in context, through the exploration of the city of Buenos Aires, its architecture, museums, and cultural and political life. Through a variety of materials, including short stories, films, journalistic pieces, blogs, guided visits, etc., students engage in critical discussions on cultural meanings and social relations, Writing assignments enhance students' ability to convey complex ideas in Spanish. Oral skills are developed by means of collaborative research projects.
- SPA 310S: Spanish Culture and ArtThis course offers an overview of Spanish culture, history, art and society while developing students' ability to do research in Spanish contexts. By examining the works of Spanish artists, writers, and filmmakers in their context of production, the course presents basic knowledge of the history and culture of Spanish society. Materials will connect the history of Spain and Toledo to national and global phenomena.
- SPA 342S/LAS 342S: Topics in Latin American Modernity: Politics of Culture in Modern ArgentinaThis course studies the role of culture in Argentina's modernity and the political, social, and artistic traditions it produced. Topics include popular culture and national identity, the birth of tango, local avant-gardes, populism, and the myth of Evita Peron, State terrorism and the politics of memory, neoliberalism and commodity culture, new forms of activism and gender and environmental politics.
