This seminar is a historical survey of the mathematical applications to astronomy. It will cover topics from the astronomy of the ancient Babylonians to the Newtonian model of the solar system and general relativity. The focus of the seminar will be to understand at a fundamental level how mathematical thought influenced astronomy and to learn the science behind the major discoveries.
