The focus of the seminar in Fall 2023 will be the relationship between the ideas of representative government and democracy. The central question is how ideals of democracy should constrain institutions of political representation. Readings will be chosen from historical and contemporary works in democratic theory as well as recent work in political science reflecting critically on the fairness and effectiveness of representative democracy in the U.S.
