How did China grow from a very poor country 40 years ago to a major player in the global economy? Can China's economy continue to grow rapidly? This course examines China's economic growth and its consequences, reviewing classic literature and recent advances in the study of China's political economy in both political science and economics. Four main questions will be addressed. How has China implemented economic reforms? What have been the consequences of the reforms? How is China developing its economy and polity in the digital age? How has China's political-economic development been shaped by, and in turn influenced, the global system?
