This course examines six questions important in the study of African politics and considers insights from research in politics, political economy, and political anthropology (geography & state formation, historical legacies, electoral politics, patronage v. programs, violence & rebellion, Africa in the international arena). An optional follow-on six-week course addresses a second, distinct set of questions and themes drawn from the graduate general exam reading list and student interests. (regimes & regime change, public goods provision, political economy-2 units-governance in areas of limited statehood) .
