This course will focus on the relationship between diplomacy and the design of foreign policy based on a few key cases. We will consider key aspects of this relationship--national interest, ethics, decision making, crisis management, economic policy, trade and investment, technology, intellectual property, and territorial rights. We will explore how presidents (or chief executives) and diplomats have crafted and utilized diplomatic tools to achieve foreign policy objectives. The course will rely on a few national case studies and draw from historical lessons and current policies.
