What is the relationship between the media, politics, and public policymaking? We examine the media as a proactive and reactive force in American politics. What constitutes `the media' and how has it changed over time? How does it influence politics and government? How do government and politics influence it? Students become familiar with topics, theories, and methods in the study of political communication, including agenda-setting, US political rhetoric, strategic messaging, public opinion, political advertising, the role of TV, technology, and celebrity in our political system.
