This half-term course provides an overview of recent applied research on bureaucracy in the
developing world. Students will examine questions such as how bureaucrats are selected; how
the incentives environment they face in office shapes their performance; how politics
intervenes and enables bureaucratic work; and what factors shape the efficacy of bureaucratic
systems.
