This course studies the role of culture in Argentine modernity including its political and ideological uses and the aesthetic and formal traditions it generated. Topics include: the invention of national and state fictions in the 19th century, the birth of tango, the history of Peronist populism, State terrorism and the politics of memory, neoliberalism and commodity culture, and new forms of political participation.
