ACTING Against Oppression: Notes from the other América

Most Latin American countries have weathered political and social traumas. Through this instability and struggle, artists have reimagined the use of theater to challenge structures, and to empower the oppressed. We will learn how different Latin American playmakers have chosen to tackle social/political theater from the '60s on. Our main focus will be Augusto Boal's "Theater of the Oppressed." Each class will include improvisations and games from the genre (NO ACTING experience necessary), readings, discussions, and watching performances. The seminar will culminate in a student created project (script, happening, play, structure).
