Topics in Low Dimensional Topology: Smooth Surfaces in 4-manifolds

The first half of the course is a detailed proof of the h-cobordism theorem. We then address topics that may include: the topological Schoenflies theorem, stable homeomorphisms of R^n, topological isotopy extension, engulfing and uniqueness of smooth structures on R^n for n>4.
