The COVID-19 pandemic and its disruption of global supply chains has put a spotlight on how a few geographic regions can be so central to the international economy, and particularly as it relates to the semiconductor industry. Bottlenecks in the manufacturing process have triggered a global chip shortage impacting everything from the production of smartphones to automobiles. What lessons can be learned from Taiwan and other countries? What can the United States do to change this state of affairs? What are the different interests and considerations policymakers will have to navigate if they are to create any lasting change?
