This course covers fundamental concepts needed to comprehend research literature related to the physics of gases. The first part covers concepts of statistical mechanics (ensemble average, and partition functions) and their applications to the calculation of the thermodynamic properties of gases. The second part deals with the kinetic theory of gases through the Boltzmann equation and its solutions, from which we derive the Navier-Stokes equations and the associated transport coefficients. The final part introduces elements of wave/quantum mechanics theory and focuses on its application to interpret atomic spectra.
