Vienna around 1900 was a world center of culture and political power. This seminar will examine the history of this period, focusing on the events leading to World War I. We will also discuss the literature, art, music, and philosophy produced during this time, with special attention to how culture responded to political changes. Figures studied include Sigmund Freud, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Arnold Schoenberg. The city of Vienna will be our laboratory during the summer, as we study culture and its relation to history and politics. Seminar includes outings to opera and concerts.
