This course studies the role of culture in Argentina's modernity and the political, social, and artistic traditions it produced. Topics include popular culture and national identity, the birth of tango, local avant-gardes, populism, and the myth of Evita Peron, State terrorism and the politics of memory, neoliberalism and commodity culture, new forms of activism and gender and environmental politics.
