This course focuses on the current geopolitical scenario, including global power competition & the rising influence of the global south. It explores the economic & social causes of organized crime, connections between transnational crime networks, geopolitics & proxy wars. It examines the expansion of organized crime into terrorist networks & irregular warfare structures, & the ways in which it disrupts democracy and harms communities. We examine cases in the Hemisphere (Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador), Afghanistan, and Sudan. Finally, we explore the policy options to confront transnational organized crime through international cooperation.
