This graduate seminar explores the role of the military in politics and society through a global comparative lens. With a focus on policy implications, the course interrogates the fundamental problem of civil-military relations: establishing effective, democratic control over the armed forces. Through diverse case studies, we explore how the complex relationship between soldiers, society, and the state can influence political and economic development. Topics covered include revolution, coups d'état, and state repression.
